i’m at the intersection of being overtired and on adderall where i can feel myself being annoying & i’m making and deleting a bunch of posts so i’m going to limit myself to one more controversial (funny, low stakes) post and then go do dishes. brace yourselves

truly i dislike it so much when people try to make enemies-to-lovers into some poignant heartfelt bullshit about “oooo you want someone to see you at your worst and still love you despite thaaat” fuck outta here that’s not enemies-to-lovers that’s just plain ol’ lovers. like maybe it’s just because i’m in multiple extremely stable and long-lasting life partnerships right now but like. i don’t need to be fuckin’ enemies with someone for them to see my worst side. all of my partners have seen me at my worst. NOBODY will see you at your worst like the partner who weathers your sobbing rants about vengeance and how badly you want to torture people to death in the middle of the night, or the partner who hears you snap in irritation when you’re scared and hurt and don’t trust anybody else. nobody gets you at your most vulnerable like the lover who literally cleans your puke out of the clogged sink while you’re sick and then hugs you while you cry about not being able to take care of yourself. like fuck off you DON’T want an enemy you just want to be loved you are being a completely normal person who wants a completely normal lover and that is AWESOME for real life (as i can attest) but PAINFULLY BORING in fiction. THIS IS NOT ENEMIES TO LOVERS

enemies-to-lovers is about thinking it would be hot for someone to no-holds-barred honest-to-fucking-god try to end your entire fucking life and pin you to the ground with a knife to your throat snarling with fiery malice in their eyes, and for you to smile through bloody teeth and rasp a laugh and choke on your breath and say, “do it, i need you to,” and for their hand to suddenly tremble so hard around the knife that the blade just barely slices and a single bead of blood slides down your throat. THAT’S the point. that’s the appeal of enemies to lovers. “you want someone to see you vulnerableeee” FUCK OUTTA HEREEEE JUST GET A NORMAL BOYFRIEND. FOR FUCK’S SAKE MAN. JUST GET A NORMAL BOYFRIEND AND DIE IN HIS ARMS ON THE BATTLEFIELD LIKE EVERYONE ELSE???

I see posts go by periodically about how modern audiences are impatient or unwilling to trust the creator. And I agree that that’s true. What the posts almost never mention, though, is that this didn’t happen in a vacuum. Audiences have had their patience and trust beaten out of them by the popular media of the past few decades.

J J Abrams is famous for making stories that raise questions he never figures out how to answer. He’s also the guy with some weird story about a present he never opened and how that’s better than presents you open–failing to see that there’s a difference between choosing not to open a present and being forbidden from opening one.

You’ve got lengthy media franchises where installments undo character development or satisfying resolutions from previous installments. Worse, there are media franchises with “trilogies” that are weird slap fights between the makers of each installment.

You’ve got wildly popular TV shows that end so poorly and unsatisfyingly that no one speaks of them again.

On top of that, a lot of the media actively punishes people for engaging thoughtfully with it. Creators panic and change their stories if the audience properly reacts to foreshadowing. Emotional parts of storytelling are trampled by jokes. Shocking the audience has become the go to, rather than providing a solid story.

Of course audiences have gotten cynical and untrusting! Of course they’re unwilling to form their own expectations of what’s coming! Of course they make the worst assumptions based on what’s in front of them! The media they’ve been consuming has trained them well.
